Many people living in poverty have to choose between heating and food.

More Than Soup is an answer to the question, "How can I help?"

Trophym is 90 and lives alone in a small house in Sarny, western Ukraine. Trophym's pension is meagre, so in summer he grows veges and keeps chickens to earn some extra money. To the question, "How's life?" Trophym's tongue-in-cheek answer is, "Easy!" His still-bright eyes reveal his sharp mind and sense of humour. Trophym looks forward to regular visits from Mission soup kitchen volunteers who bring hot meals and extra help that might be needed. Trophym is one of 49 recipients of the hot meals in Sarny.

What is it?

A More Than Soup fundraiser is a fun and simple way to raise money for a hot nutritious meal for an elderly person in poverty. By inviting your friends to a meal and asking them to donate, you can make a real difference to the elderly who rely on the Mission’s soup kitchens.

You decide the food to cook, who to invite and where to eat. Should alert levels rise, you might consider delivering food if hosting friends is not possible. We'll help you with a Host Resource Pack to help your fundraiser be a success. What are you waiting for? Sign up now

About our Soup Kitchens

The money raised goes towards Soup Kitchens that help people in desperate need. The soup kitchens work in partnership with the local church, MWB staff and volunteers, who provide hot, nutritious meals for elderly people and others who are unable to leave their homes. The meals are delivered five days a week and served alongside the good news of the Gospel. “When I first met the elderly people and saw their living conditions, I was distressed. I couldn’t believe that this kind of poverty still exists in our age of comfort and opportunities.''Nina, a 17-year-old student at Sarny Vocational training centre, run by Mission Without Borders (MWB), volunteers at MWB’s Soup Kitchen in Sarny, western Ukraine. The Soup Kitchen has been running for over 14 years, providing meals to the elderly and disabled. Meals are delivered to beneficiaries if they are housebound.

“I saw people who stay at home for months on end and can't take care of even their most basic needs. They literally just exist and survive."  - Nina

"Social institutions do a miserable job of helping the situation of these elderly people living in such poverty. God wants us to take care of them. He needs us to get involved, to help them practically and to care for them as people. We receive so much love in return! The old people thank us and bless us. They call us their children and grandchildren.” - Nina, 17-year-old volunteer, MWB Sarny

YES! I want to cook a meal to help people in need.
