Nine-year-old David from Ognyanovo, Bulgaria, is the second of four children. His brother Zhivko has learning difficulties and vision problems, requiring frequent hospital visits in Sofia. David’s parents, Nadka and Sasho, do seasonal work that doesn’t pay a living wage.
"David didn’t have a backpack or proper school supplies, making him feel excluded and discouraged," said Spaska from Mission Without Borders. "The little money they earn goes to Zhivko's medicine."
Despite their hardships, David’s parents value education, though they themselves dropped out of school as children. Sasho shared, "I’m illiterate, and I believe parents have a huge influence on their children's education."
Mission Without Borders supports David’s family through their family sponsorship program, providing regular visits and educational encouragement. This year, David received a new backpack and school supplies through the Back to School campaign.
David said, "I like my backpack because I’m not embarrassed in front of my classmates anymore. Now, my parents aren’t worried about school expenses. I want to get a driver’s license, so I’m going to study hard so my dream comes true."
David’s mother, Nadka, expressed her gratitude: "It’s amazing watching David proudly go to school every morning. Thank you, Mission Without Borders."
